Super Bowl - Eli Manning No More Kid-Ding

nfl playoff

New England Patriots Haters-you have one Manning left, and it's not the one you though would do your bidding. These NFL Playoffs have proven that the New York Giants have not made a huge mistake in putting all their hopes in Eli Manning.

In about one month's time, Eli Manning has reinvented himself to New York Giants fans, the media, and most importantly, himself. As Big Brother Peyton Manning watches this time around from the sidelines, Eli Manning, with a cool touch in the heat of hard road wins, has shown poise and yes, leadership.

New England Patriots Haters-your last chance rests on the right arm, suddenly the golden right arm, of one Eli Manning. Who would have thought that Peyton would not even get to suit up against the New England Patriots in these NFL Playoffs, and it would be Eli Manning and the New York Giants standing in the way of perfection.

Eli Manning is right now the best quarterback in the NFC. Patriot Haters--who would you rather suit up to take out the New England Patriots in this Super Bowl? Eli Manning has nailed both top quarterbacks in the NFC, Brett Favre and Tony Romo, head-to-head, on the road, chips all in.

New England Patriots Haters-your best chance is suiting up. Whether or not Eli Manning and the New York Giants can pull it off is another issue. They came damn close at Giants Stadium the final game of the year, the game which turned on the switch to Eli Manning's mojo.

Eli Manning still looks like a kid, but his transformation from Rex Grossman to Peyton Manning in one month is remarkable in what has been a remarkable NFL season. If anyone can give tips on how to quarterback against the New England Patriots, it is Eli Manning's Brother, Peyton. Funny thing is, maybe Eli doesn't need Big Brother's advice anymore. Maybe the Kid is all grown up.

Denver Broncos Continue As Surprise Team of the 2009 NFL Season

Few people thought the Denver Broncos would get off to such a fast start, but it happened.

The 2008 season was a disappointment - while the Broncos have started out well, their strength of schedule is one of the most difficult in the league. If the Broncos go 8-8 it will be a miracle. As good as the 09' season started for the Broncos, it can sink just as fast.

New head coach Josh McDaniels didn't start his new job off with a bang. After upsetting QB Jay Cutler to the point where he wanted to be traded, the Broncos looks as they were doomed.

WR Brandon Marshall was very close to leaving the team as well. While Marshall may be immature to an extent, there is no denying his on-field ability. No coach wants to lose their best two players before the team even takes the field.

The Broncos defense has been a huge surprise thus far. They have the one of the top ranked defenses in the league as of now. Their defense was they Achilles heal in 08' and cost them a chance at the playoffs.

QB Kyle Orton is the prototypical "game manager", while he won't put up the tremendous statistical performances like Drew Brees or Peyton Manning, Orton won't lose many games either.

When the weather in Denver gets colder, the Broncos must run the ball more. It seems every year no matter how the team is doing the Broncos running game is among the best in the league.

Many people thought the Broncos were a 4-12 or 5-11 team at the start of the season. The Broncos have been one of the most surprising teams in the league so far. The Broncos only competition in the AFC West is the San Diego Chargers, understandably. It will be very tough to keep pace with the talented San Diego Chargers over the course of the season.

The Denver Broncos forum at RootZoo is alive and well. Chime in with your thoughts, or visit the general NFL forum to share your thoughts about the 2009 season.

Super Bowl - Win Or Else Chucky Warns Gruden

Chucky, the terrifying doll from the Child's Play movies, has issued a warning to his real-life likeness, Buccaneers' Head Football Coach, Jon Gruden. The message: Win the Super Bowl, or else. Chucky, whose real name is Charles Lee Ray, is known for his strange and violent behavior, becoming a star thanks to several gory films in the "Child's Play" series. Gruden became involved with Chucky thanks to an eerie resemblance, featuring weird, matching grins.

Chucky, who was reached in his Malibu, California home, did not mince words when discussing Gruden's future. "Gruden better win the whole thing next season, and I'm not playing," the tiny, violent actor stated via long distance. "Everything was cool when he had three straight double digit win seasons, but that was a long, long time ago. See, his and my fortunes are intertwined. When he was up, I was up. Champagne, the ladies, you know what I mean. Now, 4 out of 6 years with a losing record, no playoff wins since winning the Super Bowl, now a weak 9-7 record in a piss-poor division. A home playoff game. Lah-dee-friggin-dah."

Chucky then excused himself for a few minutes. Screams could be heard in the background but I was afraid to ask about them when he returned. Chucky sighed and continued, "I want some results. He is making me look bad. I haven't had a hit movie since he went into the tank. You think that's a coincidence? This Malibu condo doesn't pay for itself."

When asked what might happen to his alter-ego if a Super Bowl championship was not in the cards, Chucky was once again to the point. "He knows where I stand on this. I don't fire people. I set fire to people, or chop, you know, whatever I am in the mood for that day."

It has been said by close friends of Chucky that he has been very depressed since his girlfriend, Tiffany, left him for another doll two years ago. Chucky blames Gruden for this and other changes in his (Chucky's) lifestyle since the Coach stopped winning playoff games and having winning records. "That Super Bowl win is getting a little grey around the temples, if you know what I mean," Chucky screamed through the receiver. "I want to be back on top. Frankly, I never saw the resemblance but he (Gruden) kept pushing it with that stupid grimace that he stole from me." Coach Gruden could not be reached for comment but his dry cleaner did admit that Gruden had brought in more pants for cleaning than usual.

Hooray For Tokenism

nfl playoff

I had this same idea for a post nearly 3 years ago. I took a more calculated approach towards it and decided to wait and find a good opportunity, like I'll explain shortly, to break it out. Or I've been incredibly lazy and I'm fortunate that a situation like this arose for me to reprise it. The correct answer was the latter, but the relevance and overall effect will do more good now than it would have in 2008. In 2003 the N.F.L. came up with The Rooney Rule to combat the lack of minority Head Coaches. The rule states that every time a franchise wants to hire a new Head Coach they have to at least interview one minority candidate before filling the position. The rule is aptly named after Pittsburgh Steeler owner Art Rooney who was chairmen of the leagues diversity committee when the rule was enacted. The rule is widely affiliated in NFL circles as a token attempt to alleviate the glaring omission of Black Head Coaches, and nothing more than the Leagues example of Affirmative Action. Just like AA, the RR opponents refer to these measures as "tokenistic" and counter productive. When a culture is completely oblivious to the inequities of their surroundings then all I can say is, " hooray for tokenism ".

The timing for this post is that soon we're going to hear some debates about why it's a double standard that the Dallas Cowboys were not allowed to hire interim Head Coach Jason Garrett as their permanent HC until they completely abided by the RR. While in Minnesota, the RR doesn't apply to the Vikings if they desire to hire their interim HC Leslie Frazier to their HC position, right now. So lets recap, the Cowboys have to wait until the end of the season and interview minority coaches for a position that is currently held by the guy they want to hire in the 1st place. All because Garrett is white and Frazier is black. Well, to quote the immortal words of former Cardinal great, Rod Tidwell," Well boo f*ckin who." If it takes such a token approach to help combat the biggest inequity in sports, then so be it. It's gotten to the point of an "I don't care how we get there, as long as we get there" philosophy on this subject. Look, the N.F.L is a company that has 65% black workforce, yet only 18% of that workforce is in charge. I haven't done the numbers but I assume that the percentage of Latino GM's of McDonald's across this country is much higher than 18%. That assumption is equally as racist as the assumption that 7 black coaches and 5 GMs's is an acceptable number for an industry that relies so heavily on black workers. So, I don't care that we have to go through such a trivial process that can seem comical at times. Desperate times sometimes demand deliberate and consistent measures to rectify itself. So once again " Hooray for tokenism ".

Does the system work? Does tokenism actually get black coaches jobs? Out of the 7 black HC's currently in the N.F.L. only 2 were a product of the RR. Marvin Lewis and Lovie Smith were gonna be coaches regardless of the RR or not. Jim Caldwell was a hand picked replacement by Tony Dungy. Mike Singletary and Leslie Frazier are mid-season coaching replacements. Pittsburgh Steeler HC, Mike Tomlin, and Tampa Bay Buc HC, Raheem Morris, are the only 2 direct decedents of the rule. Both were success stories and both are examples that the system can actually work. While Morris is probably more of an example of the RR, I'm gonna concentrate on Tomlin's plight to be a HC. In 2007, Steeler legend and longtime HC, Bill Cowher, retired from the NFL. Other longtime Steeler assistant coaches Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm were widely considered the frontrunners for the vacant job. Pittsburgh shocked everyone by following the system that they invented and hired the then 33 year old Tomlin. The decision surprised everyone, but in hindsight it probably shouldn't have. The similarities between Tomlin and Cohwer are much more apparent than Whisenhunt and Grimm are. They were both defensive minded young assistant coaches (Cowher was 33 when hired by the Steelers) and both were relatively unheralded. Both have studied under Hall Of Fame coaches in Tony Dungy and Chuck Knoll. Both caught the sporting world off guard when they were announced as the Steelers HC. The paths of Cowher and Tomlin were almost identical, except its not socially applicable here because Cowher is white and Tomlin is black. Matter of fact, it was widely rumored that the Steelers solely hired Tomlin to validate the rule they helped create. Basically saying that the Steelers risked their proud and rich organizational history, just to prove a point. I guess that's easier for people to believe than a "token" rule could work when applicated in the proper way. Even if the rumor was true, I would still say "hooray for tokenism."

There have been many casualties during this 7 year long war since the RRule has been around. Countless black coaches have interviewed for HC jobs that they knew they were not going to get simply to appease the RR. Which in turn, gained them a reputation of being a token interview tool and opened themselves up to criticism about their interviewing skills during the process. A timeless black coach rumor concerning this subject usually states, that "he just doesn't interview well." Greg Blache, Perry Fewell, Maurice Carthon, Ron Meeks, Emmitt Thomas, etc. are all examples of black coaches that were negatively affected by the RR. I "Rod Tidwell" them as well. They should take solice in the fact that they were all necessary pawns, in a necessary war, that has to be fought. They were treated like marked cattle and paraded around the NFL circles as gestures of appeasement for a ridiculous rule. As time has gone by there have been black coaches that have refused interviews because of the token nature of there perspective inquiries. I urge all black coaches not to take this approach. I truly feel bad for the coaches who I mentioned above and for every coach that has been negatively affected by this rule, white or black. I completely understand that they're real people and have real families, but this subject is way too important to worry about a few casualties of war. The global good concerning this issue heavily outweighs the fundamental bad things that sometimes occur. Sorry for the lost dreams and for the missed opportunities but, "hooray for tokenism."

In 2003, the Detroit Lions were heavily fined by the NFL for not abiding by the, then new, RR by hiring Steve Marriuci without interviewing any minority candidates. Mariucci was on Detroit's radar as soon as he parted ways with the S.F. 49ers. Matter of fact, the Lions fired then coach, Marty Morningwig, as soon as Mariucci became available. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, the Niners were rumored to be leaning towards then Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator, Greg Blache, to be their next HC. 2 other minority candidates were in contention and the Niners were showered with compliments for their handling of the new rule. Especially in light of the circumvision tactics of the Lions just months before. The Niners ended up hiring Oregon State HC, Dennis Erickson. Erickson was a complete shock to everyone because there was no known meeting between the 2 parties and he was not on anybody's list of candidates. San Francisco leaked out every interview they had with minority coaches and ultimately hired a white coach who no one even knew that they had interviewed. So, the Lions getting fined for hiring the guy they wanted all along and the Niners concealing who they really wanted along, are both perfect examples of tokenism when discussing this subject. While I fully understand the intent of both organizations, I still contend that the Lions deserved a fine, and the Niners, even though they handled it in a shady manner, still deserved a pass. This is simply because the Niners followed the process and the Lions did not. All I care about concerning this rule is that BC's are put in a proper position to achieve they're dreams of being an NFL HC. That they get a chance to be in a 1 on 1 environment with teams that need a HC. They need to have the opportunity to "wow" their perspective teams and maybe change a few misconceptions, and stereotypes, on their way. Basically, the RR is the only chance BC's have at getting a consistent shot at becoming a HC. Who knows, maybe a token BC interview could have included a very young Mike Tomlin for the Lions. You can't tell me that even Detroit could ignore Tomlins leadership qualities or his flawless public speaking skills. Maybe ex - Lion GM, Matt Millen, would still have his job to this day if he had abided by this rule. We'll never know, because he didn't and just like my old baseball coach used to say, "You can't steal 2nd if you can't get on 1st base ". Well, you can't get a job if you don't get the people in charge of hiring to talk with you either. So, "hooray for tokenism."

Do we really want our team to be ran by a black guy? Is he gonna act too black, publicly? What do we have in common? What will we talk about? What will my other rich friends say? These are all questions that the 32 owners in the NFL have to ask themselves before they hire a BHC. Please don't be naive to the notion that NFL owners have these same trepidations I speak of. Comfortability for some of them is just as important as wins and losses. The trickle down effect caused by that way of thinking is a major reason why we have so few BHC's. The owner hires a GM he's comfortable with, then that GM hires a HC he's comfortable with, and that HC hires assistant coaches he's comfortable with. All the while, BC's are caught in the proverbial middle. The RR is a tool that should be used especially for this kind of situation. It guarantees that you have to interview BC's during the hiring process, which in turn, should help break down barriers, clear up some stereotypes, and ease some fears that people have about black people in general. What I don't understand though, is why doesn't the comfortability between the HC and the players on the field matter just as much? By the rational I mentioned before, shouldn't a majority of the players on each team automatically be more comfortable with a BHC? Are we watching the Owners and GM's playing each Sunday? Comfortability with someone is usually attained by proper verbal communication with 2 intelligent people that share common interests. So, since Football is an obvious common denominator pertaining to this subject, then it is plausible that 2 men can achieve comfortability in a reasonably short amount of time. Forcing owners to sit down with BC's and hear them verbalize their thoughts and views might help comfortability, or might not accomplish anything at all. But without the RR we have no shot.

Just understand that there has only been 2 organizations that have hired a BHC more than once, and those teams were the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders (Raiders hired Art Shell twice). There has only been 3 ex- BHC's that have ever received another chance to be a HC again. There are 5 current rehire HC's in the NFL and none of them are black. In the last 3 years we've seen Eric Mangini, Chan Gailey, Norv Turner, Pete Carroll, and Mike Shanahan all receive another chance at Head Coaching. Thats right, Chan Gailey. I refuse to get in the debate about whether BHC's have a shorter rope than white coaches when it comes to coaching duration. But, there is no disputing that BHC's hold the very end of the rope when it comes to the rehire process. Tony Dungy, Herm Edwards, and Dennis Green are the only BHC rehires in history and they were a combined 190-147 with 23 playoff appearances before their rehire. Take away Shanahan, and the other 4 current rehires I mentioned above are a combined 132-152, and have only 8 total playoff appearances. Hell, add Shanahans 13 playoff appearances and you still don't get to the 23 that only 3 BHC rehires have. How does that make any sense? It most certainly doesn't, but it's kind of a skewed argument anyways because there have only been 15 BHC's in N.F.L. history. So, there's not that many too rehire to begin with. The recently fired BHC, Mike Singletary, will probably not get further than Defensive Coordinator again. Charlie Weiss will probably get a head coaching job before Romeo Cromell will receive another shot at it. This is the way it goes for BHC's in the NFL and that's how it's gonna be for the foreseeable future. It took Shell almost 15 years to get another job and it happened to be with the team that originally hired him. Shell was fired the same year he took the Raiders to the AFC Championship and it still took him 15 years to get another job. As for the Colts and Raiders being the only teams to hire multiple BHC's (even though the Raiders really didn't), that's also not going to change anytime soon, either. It almost seems as if the teams that have hired a BHC in the past have already done there League civil duty and don't feel obligated to do it again anytime soon. At the end of the season, there will be potentially 8-10 coaching vacancies. I contend that there will be no BHC rehires and there won't be a 3rd team to hire multiple BHC's when the 2011 season starts. I'm tired of saying it, but I think you know what I wanna say.

It would be easy to label me a Black militant that just can't wait to find a hot button issue like this to rant and rave about. To be honest, I wish the RR didn't exist and a team like the Dallas Cowboys could hire who they want to, whenever they want to. It's hard for me to tell a man like, Jerry Jones, that he can't make an immediate decision concerning a team that he has spent a lot of money to obtain, and maintain, for over 20 years. I wish that the success of Mike Tomlin and Raheem Morris would be enough to encourage other owners to follow suit. I also wish that Leslie Frazier and Perry Fewell would've already become HC's, which would make me have so much less disdain for this process as a whole. It took the NFL till 1989 to hire the 1st BHC (Shell). It was 1966 for the NBA and 1975 for the MLB. 14 years later than Baseball for god sakes?! We're at an all-time high with the 7 we've got and I'm still completely fed up with this subject. If this post was about College Football and their coaching inequities it would be about 5000 words and a lot less censored. This subject is the most despicable aspect of sports. When it comes to sports, "Angry Black Man," only comes out when it pertains to the black stereotype that "we are inherently too stupid to accomplish important tasks" (such as black QB's can't win a Superbowl). My anger has now morphed into a huge chip on my shoulder. Like with any chip, I now have a sense of entitlement that won't be satisfied with the mere 18% we have now. I'll settle with the 40% range, but I spit on 18%. We need more black GM's, way more BHC's, and more black men in power in general in the NFL. I would love to live in a world without the need for the Rooney Rule. I can honestly say that I never concentrate on the color of the skin when I hear an announcement of an NBA coaching hire. I just get to debate if that coach was the right choice or not. I don't have to dissect every step of the hiring process in the NBA. I've watched sports for 27 years and I have never had to worry about the inequities concerning the NBA. So, I've already lived in such a world and I happen to think it's awesome. Until we get to that level in the NFL, I'll have to put my black glove on. Then I'm gonna stand up on my podium, with my right arm raised, and scream "hooray for tokenism!"

I am a 34-year old blogger who believes that he is the best sports blog writer on the web. My site deals with content that most people do not talk about in the proper context. We have some how turned sports into more of a gossip based entertainment outlet instead of just concentrating on what goes on between the lines of the field, court, or ice. The information age we live in has skewed our judgment of the these people and the dehumanization of our modern day athletes has evolved to what is today. While I fully understand that I ultimately strive to be part of this hypocrisy, I hope that I already have and continue to distinguish myself as a qualified teacher to the ignorant part of the sports viewing society. I've been engulfed in sports since I was 5 years old and I believe i see it differently than most. I call myself the "John Nash" of sports and I truly believe in that persona, minus the subsequent schizophrenia. I consider myself a thinker and not a writer. You will understand that more when you read my material and figure out that I have the grammar of a 7 year old kid. I am talented though, I have 13 movie ideas and 10 TV series ideas. My mind is constantly going this way and my website is an perfect outlet for my ideas to come out before my head explodes. Anyways, I hope you enjoy my work and hope to hear your feedback. Thank you.

Dallas Cowboys Football History

The Dallas Cowboys joined the NFL in 1960 as an expansion team. They became very popular hence, primarily because the team has always shown the might and the form of a champion.

For 160 consecutive games, the Dallas Cowboys have sold out every single seat in their arena. This streak started almost 20 years ago. This only shows how powerful the team really is, in and out of the playing court. The record they have established caused them to earn the title of being the most valuable sports franchise in the United States by Forbes Magazine.

Before they are known as the Cowboys, the team was called the Steers and the Rangers first. The team started playing in the 1960s at the Cotton Bowl arena. They never won a single game during their first season though. But that didn't stop them from winning big several years later.

With Don Meredith, Chuck Howley, and Don Perkins playing for the team in the 1960s, the team slowly but surely became one of the contenders of the league. The nationwide popularity of the Dallas happened the next decade when they became the favorites during the Super Bowl. The team won Super Bowl XII, after making an appearance in Super Bowl X and eventually, in Super Bowl XIII.

In the 1980s, Danny White joined the team. He replaced Roger Staubach as quarterback and he was able to lead the Cowboys to a five-time playoff series during his reign. But despite their good performance, the team failed to make it into Super Bowl. There were lots of losses and disappointments during this decade. But the team knows how to get past them.

In the 2000s, Dave Campo moved from being a defensive coordinator to head coach. But he failed to perform as expected. However, in 2003, the Cowboy became the team with the best record, allowing them to acquire a playoff berth during that season. The Cowboys were actually on and off, being in the playoffs and then out again. It is like a rollercoaster ride, as the team tried to regain their lost championship form.

However, a few more misfortunes befell the team as 12 of the players got injured in an accident at their practice facility. The arena collapsed when a wind storm strike. Even so, the Dallas Cowboys will continue to be a strong force in the NFL. In fact, they are scheduled to be a part of the Legacy Weekend games of the 2009 season.

Throughout their stint in the National Football League, the cowboys have won a total of five Super Bowl Championships. They have 10 Conference Championships and 19 Division Championships as well, along with a total of 29 playoff appearances.

The team used to play at the Cotton Bowl stadium during their first few years in the league. Then they transferred to the Texas Stadium in 1971 until they moved out only a year ago. Right now, the team is playing at the Cowboys Stadium, which serves as their official home court.

The Saints' Super Bowl Victory

On February 7, 2010, the mighty New Orleans Saints won Super Bowl 44, which was the first such victory in the history of the franchise. Many sports analysts counted them out and said they didn't stand a chance against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. They were the underdogs and there was no way they could win the Super Bowl. They were wrong.

The Saints took the field believing they could defeat the Colts. The game got off to a slow start, but it quickly switched gears in the second quarter. Completing passes anywhere he wanted, the Saints starting Quarterback Drew Brees took over the game. There was nothing the Colts could do. The Saints scored points every time they had the ball.

Closing out the third quarter in control of the game it was obvious that the Saints were going to win. The Saints had total control of the game on both offense and defense. The Saints were on their way to making history. This was their destiny.

With only three minutes left in regulation, corner back Tony Porter intercepted a Peyton Manning pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. This was the last score the Saints needed to secure the Super Bowl victory giving them their spot in the NFL history books. Manning and the colts did get the ball back with one more chance to score, but they came up empty as time ran out.

What a game for the Saints who used to be called the Aint's by their own fans because they were just that poor of a team. Funny how things change. Once the laughing stock of the NFL, the Saints are now World Champions and very deserving of that title. Taking the Lombardi trophy back to New Orleans was something that Brees only dreamed of. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina this was a way to let the people of the city know that dreams do come true no matter how bad things may seem.

Giants Nearly Fumble Away Game To Eagles

When Tom Coughlin arrived he made many claims as to what he would do for this franchise, with obviously, winning being the most important. That has been accomplished. For the third straight year the Giants will have a non losing season and will more than likely, barring a miracle by the New Orlean Saints (the only team left that can knock them out of a playoff spot) it looks like the Giants will wrap up a wildcard spot, and are still in the driver's seat for the #5 seed.

As a Giants fan you would have to look back to 1991 for the last time the Giants had this many non losing seasons in a row, as well as the same number of playoff appearances consecutively. There is no question, regardless of the heat Coughlin took early on here in NY, that the only thing he does do, and does it well, is win. More on that in a moment.

When he also arrived an even bigger challenge was to solve the fumbling problem that haunted former Giants running back Tiki Barber. He did that as well, and he went on to become the greatest running back in Giants history. That challenge has seemed to resurface these past few weeks, and it almost cost them the game against the Eagles on Sunday.

In for the Giants to go anywhere come January they need to start learning how to hold onto the ball in December. On Sunday, Jacobs put the ball on the ground twice, and Amani Toomer (although the call was correct, that it was not a fumble), put it out there as well. Whatever Coughlin did to fix Barber's problem, he needs to do the same for Jacobs. It is clear that in order for this team to be a contender they will need Jacobs now more than ever with the season ending injury to Ward.

When Coughling arrived in NY he was labeled as a "General", wears his players down, too much old school. Isn't that what you want out of your head coach? Someone who will make the players accountable for their bad play? There seemed to be a revolt against him early on in his tenure here, however those bad apples were weeded out and now he finally has most of his own guys here that play extremely hard for him.

Nothing was more evident in that as we saw the Giants defense step up big when they had to on Sunday against the Eagles after the first Jacobs fumble. When there backs were against the wall with the offense putting the team in a bad situation for the second straight week, the defense responded. The knock on the Giants defense for the past 15 years has been, that they just can not make a good stop. It looks as if Tom Coughlin and defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnualo just may have solved that issue as well.

New Orleans Saints Are Super Bowl Contenders in 2009

The New Orleans Saints have a very talented offense that can take them deep into January without question. QB Drew Brees is playing the best he has ever played and will be a favorite for MVP once the season is over. The 09' season should be a good one for the Saints franchise overall, many expect the Saints to play late in January.

Drew Brees has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league - having all the offense threats such as WR Marques Colston, RB Mike Bell, BB Reggie Bush, and WR Jeremy Shockey. All the pieces are in place for the Saints to win many games this season. Will they be just a good regular season team? Will they use all their offense weapons in January when the pressure is on also? Offenses this good don't come along this often so the Saints must make the most of the great players they do have now.

The NFC South isn't as good as it was in years past. The Saints should win the division - if everyone, especially Drew Brees, stay healthy for the entire season. The Saints should have many easy games on their schedule to rack up wins and get a high seed for the playoffs, it not the number one seed. The defense is what the Saints need to keep opponents to a relatively low score - we know the Saints can score in bunches and quickly.

New Orleans has struggled financially the last few years and a good Saints football team is what the New Orleans community needs. We know what happened with the 07' New England Patriots - they were on the verge of the greatest NFL season of all time but were defeated in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants. It uncertain the Saints can be as great an offense as the Patriots were in 07', what will matter is how they execute in the playoffs.

The New Orleans Saints forum is filled with excited Saints fans at RootZoo. All football fans would love the new fantasy football there too.

NFL Betting Systems

Who will be the next Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Tony Romo? Wouldn't you like to know! Here are three options, however, that could very well take their game - and your fantasy team to the next level!

Kyle Orton Chicago Bears: Rex Grossman may have another year with the Bears, but that doesn't mean he'll be starting that entire time! Grossman has been inconsistent, to say the least, and could be using his last chance. Orton is just a back-up, but given the chance to shine, he could be Chicago's main man. They've got a solid receiving core that was strengthened this off season and Orton could take over the reigns sooner than later if Grossman starts things off rocky.

Aaron Rodgers Green Bay Packers: Rodgers watched patiently from the sidelines for the past few years waiting for this day. Favre has finally retired and will pass the torch to Mr. Rodgers. He obviously won't be the second coming of Brett, but he's got the skills and receivers to provide your team with some great numbers. Watch for Rodgers to excel as the Packers head honcho. Green Bay will soon become Mr. Rodgers neighborhood!

Alex Smith San Francisco 49ers: Last year was supposed to Smith's year! However, that obviously didn't happen. This year, he's another year older and has the pass-friendly offensive coordinator, Mike Martz, calling the plays. Look for this to be Smith's season. The 49ers are looking to improve and in a QB-friendly town - they are hoping for Smith to finally lead the charge back into the playoffs! He could be the man to do the same for your fantasy team!

You want a strong man at the helm of your fantasy team - and these guys could slip through the cracks in most drafts allowing you to solidify other key components!

AFC West Update and Carson Palmer

It's been an interesting couple of weeks in the AFC West. I may be overly optimistic, but I still think the Chiefs have a chance to make a run for the division title. I want to touch on all four teams for a moment.

But first, how about the Raiders going out and trading for Carson Palmer? A very interesting move. Palmer is a decent quarterback who probably has a couple years left in him. And news reports are suggesting that Palmer is likely to start against the Chiefs this weekend. Wow.

My take? Quarterbacks, even veteran quarterbacks, seldom excel in their first season with a new team. And that's when they have an entire off-season and preseason to prepare. In 1993, Joe Montana took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game, but did so mostly on the back of an outstanding defense. And in 2009, Brett Favre took the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game and posted a quarterback rating of 107.2. A very impressive season late in his career. But do you want to know what's more common? Last year the Washington Redskins traded for Donovan McNabb who struggled and finished with a quarterback rating of 77.1. The only season he had with a worse rating? His rookie year in 1999 where he posted a rating of 60.1. Carson Palmer isn't Brett Favre. Heck, he isn't even Donovan McNabb. He's a mediocre quarterback who enjoyed his best seasons in 2005 and 2006. The Raiders made a bold move, but probably not a smart move. If they end up winning the division and making a run in the playoffs, then it was a great move. If not, they've given up two very high draft picks and have hurt the long-term development of their team.

Now let's look around the standings in the AFC West.

San Diego Chargers (4-1): The Chargers have beaten Minnesota (1-5), Kansas City (2-3), Miami (0-5) and Denver (1-4). They've lost to New England (5-1).

Reasons for optimism: The Chargers have managed to start fast, but that's been more the result of the teams they've played, than how they've played. They still have a lot of talent. Ryan Matthews appears to be a legitimate starting running back.

Reasons for pessimism: Antonio Gates has played little this season. Their schedule is going to get much tougher. And Norv Turner is still their coach.

Prediction: Their schedule is going to get much tougher. And they're going to need to play much better. I have a difficult time finding more than 5 wins on their remaining schedule. I think they end up 9-7, which is right around the record most of Norv Turner's teams end up.

Oakland Raiders (4-2): The Raiders have beaten Denver (1-4), New York Jets (3-3), Houston (3-3) and Cleveland (2-3). They've lost to Buffalo (4-2) and New England (5-1).

Reasons for optimism: Darren McFadden is a stud, and the Raiders are second in the league in rushing. They've been the most impressive team in the division so far, and are a legitimate playoff contender.

Reasons for pessimism: The Raiders are ranked #28 in the league in total defense, and are particularly vulnerable against the pass where they're ranked #30 in the league. Quarterback Jason Campbell was having a decent season before breaking his collarbone last week. It will be a big question as to how Carson Palmer will respond to his new surroundings. I don't see any reason to think that the team will be better with Palmer than they were with Campbell. And it's likely that they'll be worse.

Prediction: The Raiders have a clear shot to win this division, but difficult to see six wins on their remaining schedule. I'm guessing they end up 9-7 as well.

Kansas City Chiefs (2-3): The Chiefs have beaten Minnesota (1-5) and Indianapolis (0-6). And they've lost to Buffalo (4-2), Detroit (5-1) and San Diego (4-1).

Reasons for optimism: After two historically bad losses, the Chiefs appear to have righted the ship. And if they can pull off a win in Oakland this weekend, they're sitting at 3-3, which is exactly where I had them (though I had them beating Buffalo and losing to Oakland to reach 3-3). If Jackie Battle can provide the Chiefs with a consistent ground attack, they're going to be OK.

Reasons for pessimism: They're still missing Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki for the season. And they've got a tough schedule ahead.

Prediction: Believe it or not, a win this weekend would put the Chiefs in a good position to win the AFC West. They would have their two toughest divisional games behind them with a 1-1 record. That leaves them two games against Denver, and home games against San Diego and Oakland. I think they've got 5 or 6 more wins in them this season, which puts them at 7-9 or 8-8. My original prediction of 9-7 looks very difficult.

Denver Broncos (1-4): Denver has beaten Cincinnati (4-2). They've lost to Oakland (4-2), Tennessee (3-2), Green Bay (6-0) and San Diego (4-1).

Reasons for optimism: John Fox is in his first year with the team, and he's a good coach. He just didn't have a lot to work with. Their schedule does get a bit easier.

Reasons for pessimism: Lots of them, including that they just traded away their best wide receiver. I'm not a Tim Tebow hater, and I have no clue if he's going to be a good quarterback or not. History has shown us that quarterbacks with bad mechanics seldom have sustained success in the league. But Tebow is an interesting young man and an incredible athlete. He will make it interesting to say the least.

Prediction: Hard to see more than a couple wins left on their schedule. I'm guessing 4-12.

Matt Hasselbeck : Seattle Seahawks Quarterback

A native of Boulder, Colorado, Matthew Michael Hasselbeck was born on September 25, 1975. He currently plays the position of quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks after initially being drafted by the Packers during the 1998 NFL Draft.

After attending Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts, Matt Hasselbeck entered Boston College. Immediately after, he was drafted in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft and began his professional football career in 1999 as backup for Brett Favre. The Packers later traded him and, in 2001, Matt Hasselbeck signed on with the Seattle Seahawks.

It would appear that the Seahawks made a good decision in selecting Hasselbeck, who became the team's all-time, highest-rated passer in 2003. In addition, he is currently ranked ninth in the NFL's all-time passer ratings. In 2005, Matt Hasselbeck's performance was regarded as one of the best in the NFL as he led the Seahawks to their third consecutive playoff appearance while boasting the highest passer rating in the NFC.

In January 2006, Matt Hasselbeck lead his team all the way to the SuperBowl XL and, even though his team was not victorious, this appearance marked the first for the Seahawks. With so many accomplishments, it's no surprise that Matt Hasselbeck's family would be filled with pride. He is the son of Don Hasselbeck, who is the former tight end for the New England Patriots and a brother to Tim Hasselbeck, who is the current backup quarterback for the New York Giants. His sister-in-law, Elisabeth, is best known as a co-host on daytime talk television's The View and she is also a former Survivor contestant. Reportedly in favor of being called Matthew, Hasselbeck finds that most do not abide by his wishes and usually refer to him as Matt instead.

Hottest NFL Jerseys For 2008

Every team in the NFL has played at least 4 games, which makes this the unofficial end to the first quarter of the football season. Now's the best time to get your hands on a new jersey to support your favorite team or player. Sure, it's cool to be the first one on your block with a jersey from a rookie drafted in April, but what do you think all those Chargers fans are doing with old Ryan Leaf jerseys? Instead of taking a chance on a rookie, use the facts from the first quarter of the season to help sway your decision. Here's the hottest jerseys so far:

-Brett Favre, New York Jets
-Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
-Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
-Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons,
-LaMarr Woodley, Pittsburgh Steelers

A lot of people jumped the gun on the Brett Favre bandwagon and bought his New York Jets jersey the day it was available. So far it seems like a good investment. Favre threw six touchdown passes in week 4, and has the New York faithful excited about the possibility of another playoff appearance. Next up are two rookies who have seen a great deal of playing time. Matt Ryan has hooked up with Roddy White to become one of the league's most potent pass-catch combinations. Meanwhile, Matt Forte is doing everything the Bears have asked of him. He's running, blocking and catching the ball out of the backfield, and he has the Bears in first place. Matt Ryan's teammate, Michael Turner, the pride of Northern Illinois University, has caught fire thus far, rushing for more than 540 yards through his first five games, and has become the best friend of many fantasy football owners. Finally, on the defensive side of the ball, LaMarr Woodley is tied for third in the league with 5.5 sacks, and already has a forced fumble and an interception. Steelers fans love a smash-mouth defense, and Woodley is definitely leading the way to this point.

The Top 5 NFL Wide Receivers in 2009

The wide receiver situation in 2009 has been more interesting than any position. Some unexpected names have achieved great levels of success through the first six weeks of the football season, while other big names continue to struggle week in and week out. Will this trend reverse itself in due time, or have some newer names ushered themselves in as the next big names in pro football? Let's take a look at the top 5 wide receivers thus far.

5. Chad Ochocinco. Call him Ochocinco or call him Johnson, the choice is yours. Whatever it is, 2009 has been a revival year for him, as many people thought he lost his touch after a dismal 2008.

4. Steve Smith (New York Giants). While he leads the NFL in receiving yards, Smith is still a newer name on the scene and doesn't win the respect that some of the bigger names to follow will. This, of course, could change after a few more weeks of great football.

3. Andre Johnson. Last year's leader in receptions and receiving yards is having another tremendous year with the Texans. He could easily win the #2 or #1 spot on this list, as they're all really close in talent and numbers.

2. Reggie Wayne. Peyton Manning has been huge in 2009, and Wayne has been the biggest beneficiary here.

1. Larry Fitzgerald. Last year's playoffs hero is picking up right where he left off - with another exceptional year of football for the Arizona Cardinals.

2008 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Outlook

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers season will be playing their 33rd season this year and will be attempting to improve upon 2007's fair performance of 9-7. They actually played a good season last year, capturing the NFC South Title and returning to the playoffs. The team eventually lost to the New York Giants (as everybody seemed to underestimate this team in 2007) but left Tampa fans excited over the Buccaneers' potential for upcoming seasons. What does the future hold for this former Super Bowl champion?

The team quickly took care of their own early in the year by re-signing free agent Michael Bennett, Antoine Cash, Kevin Carter, Sammy Davis, and Jerramy Stevens. As recently as June 11th, the team was still settling contracts and keeping important players like quarterback Jake Plummer. There were also two notable free agent acquisitions in Warrick Dunn, of the Atlanta Falcons and Brian Griese, of the Chicago Bears. However, the team also had its share of damaging losses. The team had to say goodbye to six regular players including Brian Kelly, John Wade, Matt Lehr, Anthony Becht, Kalvin Pearson and Bruce Gradkowski.

Now, just after head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen have been resigned to a new deal, the team eyes its uncertain future. The draft was a telling sign of what to expect from Tampa this year and the team chose seven big name rookies for development. Their first draft pick was cornerback Aqib Talib from Kansas, followed by wide receiver Dexter Jackson from Appalachian State, and offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah from Rutgers. The list was rounded off with defensive tackle Dre Moore from Maryland, quarterback Josh Johnson from San Diego, linebacker Geno Hayes from Florida State, and running back Cory Boyd from South Carolina.

Some speculated that the Buccaneers might make a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Lito Sheppard. However, the team chose to stick with Talib, who some experts describe as an athlete of high risk as well as high rewards. Another object was to enhance the wide receiving position, but Dexter Jackson didn't impress many because of his small size. Fans were more satisfied with the picks of Zuttah, Moore and Hayes. There are mixed feelings to the signing of Josh Johnson; many believe he will eventually become a starter, but there remains question as to whether Tampa can afford to cut their other quarterbacks in order to keep him happy. Boyd was less impressive, and many fans were disappointed by the team's efforts to create a greater pass rushing group.

The consensus is that Talib and Jackson are bankable but at the same time, also carry some heavy risks. Their team's strength will be immediately tested when they face off in preseason games against the Miami Dolphins and then the vengeful New England Patriots in the second week. The regular season begins at the Louisiana Superdome as they take on the New Orleans Saints. It's clear that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a strategy coming into this season. Now fans speculate as to whether it's enough to ward off intense competition.

2008 Cleveland Browns Outlook

The Cleveland Browns used to be "that good", though to be fair, their last undefeated season was way back in 1948 before they joined the NFL. However, their greatest score of 15-0 is certainly a worthy goal and the Browns hope to score closer to that achievement than last year's 10-6 record. Though last year's end score was far from perfect, season 61 wasn't half bad as the Browns still finished second-place in the AFC North. Are there are major changes that may affect the Brown's performance in Season 62?

The Browns will remain under the direction of head coach Romeo Crennel for the upcoming season. The contract extension was given to Crennel, not provided by request, showing that the team still supports the coach's efforts. They have also extended the contract of offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who snubbed a Baltimore Ravens' head coaching position to stay with the Browns. However, long-term contracts don't always mean security, as defensive coordinator Todd Grantham found out, after being released only months after signing a two year contract extension. Mel Tucker was given the position, while Cory Undlin was promoted to a defensive backs coaching position.

How about the latest news on players? Currently, there are 19 players on the roster that are free agents in some way, including 13 players that have full rights as unrestricted agents. The team has signed cornerback Terry Cousin, guard Red Hadnot, linebacker Shantee Orr, defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, wide receiver Donté Stallworth and defensive end Corey Williams. Have there been any major releases in preparation of the new season? Yes, defensive lineman Orpheus Roye and cornerback Kenny Wright were both released as unrestricted free agents. The draft was somewhat more promising, though the team did not have a selection in the first three rounds. The team settled on linebacker Beau Bell, tight end Martin Rucker, defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin, wide receiver Paul Hubbard and defensive end Alex Hall.

If you watched the Browns carefully in 2007, you probably remember raising an eyebrow or two as the team gave their best performance in over 14 years. Their 51-45 win over the Cincinnati Bengals tied the franchise record and included five touchdown passes. In fact, they just barely missed the playoffs last season because of imposed tiebreaker rules. Six players earned Pro Bowl recognition and their team efforts were definitely not the shame of the NFL, especially compared to other teams' lackluster performance. What does the future hold?

The Cleveland Browns are more optimistic this season after providing formidable competition in 2007 and strengthening their offense. Players that have earned favorable ink have included quarterback Derek Anderson, wide receiver Braylon Edwards and tight end Kellen Winslow.

The defense is another story, as indicated by Larry Cook's preview of the Browns 2008 NFL Draft needs below. While defense has been lacking, some of the team's draft picks including Ahtyba Rubin and Alex Hall have been promising. What is the final verdict? The Cleveland Browns are an upswing and may prove to be the most competitive team in the AFC North, especially competing against the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens. Their greatest threat will continue to be the Pittsburgh Steelers.
